The Old St. Bartholomew Chapter is one of 18 chapters of the South Carolina Genealogical Society. The State Society was founded in 1970 and currently has over 2,000 members. A person who joins the Old St. Bartholomew Chapter is automatically a member of the South Carolina Genealogical Society, which is a nonprofit, tax exempt organization. The SCGS was chartered by the Secretary of State for South Carolina. The Internal Revenue Code, Section 501 (c) (3) allows tax deductions for the value of material donated to the chapter. The Chapter directs its own activities as a member of the parent society. The Chapter's publications are of particular interest to the geographical area, while the Society's publications seek to serve the entire state. Through these publications, members may seek or share genealogical information. The mission of the Old St. Bartholomew Chapter is to raise the standards of genealogical research through educational programs and workshops, publications of genealogical data, promotion of the collection and preservation of records, and the stimulation of a general interest in genealogy and family history.
Historian Spoke to Local Genealogy Group
Did you know that a nineteenth-century Colleton County landowner had a direct link to one of the most revered events in U.S. Marine Corps history, that an American industrial icon was named for a tract of land in Colleton County, and that one of the most important National Park Service directors came from humble roots in Colleton? Rural and relatively unknown to outsiders, Colleton County has produced some fascinating connections to very famous Americans and American events throughout our history. Charles Philips, a historian with Brockington and Associates spoke of some of Colleton's world-wide influence. The program is entitled, "Colleton County Connections: People and the Events they Inspired." Click Here to view the information.
The Board of Directors requested that Article IX - Dissolution of Chapter be updated to insure that the assets would be remain local. These Bylaws were updated and adopted by a unanimous affirming vote of the OSBC members present at the January 10, 2014 meeting.
